Bodrum Castle and the underwater museum: can you visit on foot?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 7 min read

Stone towers of Bodrum Castle rising between the town's two harbours

Bodrum Castle is the rare headline sight that really does fit into a day without transport. It stands between the two harbours, beside the old town, and contains the Museum of Underwater Archaeology rather than sitting next to it. That distinction matters: a castle ticket is not merely for ramparts and views. The shipwreck displays, towers, courtyards and steep internal routes are the visit.

What you are actually visiting

The Knights of St John built the castle between 1406 and 1523. Inside are towers associated with different European groups and galleries devoted to underwater archaeology. The strongest reason to enter is the combination: a medieval fortress above the harbour and finds recovered from ancient wrecks below the Aegean.

Do not promise yourself every room. Galleries can close for conservation, and opening arrangements change. Hours follow the season: in the winter months the museum is usually listed as open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, with a longer day in summer, so check the official museum page for your date. Allow at least two hours; three is more comfortable if you read displays and climb the towers.

A sensible route from the old town

Start at the waterfront and walk through the bazaar lanes towards the castle entrance. The distances are short, but the visit itself is not level: expect stone, slopes, stairs and exposed sections. After the castle, continue around the harbour rather than trying to add every ancient site in Bodrum.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus and the ancient theatre are separate sites. Both add context, yet combining all three with the castle turns a relaxed walk into a checklist. With half a day, choose the castle plus one. With only two hours ashore, stay around the castle and harbour.

Independent visit or guided city tour?

An independent visit suits travellers who want to spend time with the shipwreck displays and stop when they choose. A guide adds the historical thread between the castle, theatre and Myndos Gate. The private guided Bodrum city tour for cruise passengers lists the castle, the museum, the theatre and Myndos Gate, but not the Mausoleum, and is most useful when your time ashore is fixed.

Check exactly which entrance fees are included before booking any tour. Also confirm the meeting point and whether the itinerary enters the museum or only stops outside the castle. A photograph at the gate is not the same experience as seeing the collections.

Who may find it difficult?

The castle is a poor place to make blanket accessibility promises. Historic paving, gradients and stairs mean that the complete route will not work for every wheelchair user, pushchair or traveller with limited mobility. Ask the museum directly which areas are accessible on the day and which galleries are open. Families with toddlers should expect to carry more than they planned.

There is also limited shade on some outdoor sections. In hot weather, go early, take water and save the exposed walk to the theatre for another time. The castle is better when you still have the energy to look, not as the final stop after a long boat day.

The honest choice

For most first-time visitors, buy the current museum ticket at the official channel, arrive near opening time and explore independently. Choose a guide if you want the city’s sites connected into one story or must fit them around a cruise call. Skip the interior only when stairs, heat or very limited time make the harbour view the more realistic pleasure.
